Air Quality Consultation
The first survey of our members by the Local Issues working group was in May 2007 in response to Brighton & Hove Council's Air Quality Consultation.
Now, we didn't expect all our members to read the full 107 page long report so we boiled it down into the following key points of interest:
From our reading of the council consultation report we believed the council was making the following assumptions:
- Local air pollution is mainly due to traffic;
- Other sources of air pollution are minor and are being dealt with also, so we are not going to go into detail on these;
- To reduce pollution the council is aiming to reduce total car use;
- The council is assuming there will be small annual reductions in pollution through more efficient engines in new cars;
- The council is assuming that improving public transport, cycling, walking and reducing congestion (idling engines pollution) are the key methods for reducing air pollution.
