What Lies Behind The Whitehawk Inn?
Frances Duncan is Director of The Whitehawk Inn, a company & charity that has helped change the lives of individuals, families and the community of Whitehawk and across Brighton & Hove. Frances first became involved as a volunteer advising on the use of space and colour. Through many twists and turns she now heads the organisation, a role that requires the transformation of principles and ideologies into practical and effective actions (with some amazing results!).
She has extensive knowledge of many aspects of life in the local community and a long term interest in alleviating deprivation and reducing social exclusion.
Born in Kenya, the second of four children, Frances’ family settled in Brighton in 1967: since then her personal and professional life has been rooted in this city. Her parents were able to provide a happy childhood with lots of opportunities, working as successful professionals whilst giving much of themselves and their time to the social causes they believed in.
As well as working, Frances has raised a family, volunteered in urban regeneration projects in Uganda, served as a school governor and travelled as much as time and money would allow. She loves to spend time cooking (and eating!) with her extended family and friends, visiting France and walking the Sussex Downs.
Frances will talk about her journey so far, the challenges facing organisations in the community & voluntary sector and the innovative way that the Whitehawk Inn is tackling this along with tips for keeping the vision alive!
