Guest speaker Julian Engelsman, Founder and Managing Director of Bagelman.

From student days hawking filled bagels around Brighton from a box on his shoulder, Bagelman MD Julian Engelsman has steadily built Bagelman into one of Brighton’s strongest brands. The company sells almost half a million bagels a year and was recognised as Sussex’s Best Small Business in 2007/2008.

Its two Brighton retail stores offer a tempting range of freshly-baked, filled-to-order bagels and inventive ‘house specials’, whilst a third, its Hove diner, boasts an extra menu of classic deli-style favourites. An integral part of the Bagelman setup is the bakery adjoining their Bond Street store – still the only authentic bagel bakery in Sussex.

Bagelman has won a fiercely loyal following through consistent service and creative marketing over 14 years and has an enviable reputation of almost unbroken year-on-year growth.

Julian has truly learnt ‘from the ground up’ and set up his first test bakery in a disused University of Sussex science lab in 1996. He now heads a team of 22 and seeing his company buckling the recession, is confidently planning to expand along the South Coast.
