City Celebrates Business by the Sea

Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce is to stage an October 2010 week of events celebrating business in the city, under the banner ‘Business by the Sea’. The events, which are open to owners and managers of any local business, are designed to strengthen the community bonds between businesses while also giving a no-obligation taster of Chamber of Commerce membership.

For four days from October 12, a variety of daily events will introduce non-members to the Chamber’s commercial, social and influential advantages. Highlights include a networking treasure hunt around central Brighton culminating in lunch; a local issues debate on the controversial question of whether Brighton needs a dedicated business district; and entry for non-members to one of the Chamber’s famous Friday networking breakfasts at Carluccio’s, in the North Laine area. The breakfast is followed by what is billed as a ‘group photo’ in Jubilee Square but in fact is to be a fascinating ‘impromptu’ (secret) happening to entertain everyone there, business people and general public alike. And the week kicks off on the social level with a night of cocktails, karaoke and Thai-style nibbles at the karaoke venue Lucky Voice on Black Lion Street.

The city is presently being flooded with free Business by the Sea ‘passports’ which give details of what’s happening and how to reserve places, and which may be found in most of the city’s business centres and office buildings, as well pubs, bars and restaurants. All events must be booked in advance and some, but not all, may require a small payment. Chamber President Julia Chanteray said: “Brighton & Hove is one of Britain’s most successful cities for business, which we’re celebrating by offering every business in the city a week-long opportunity to mingle, network, develop new business relationships, debate business issues and let their hair down a bit. It’s an excellent taster for what the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce has to offer throughout the year. “

She added: “Chambers of Commerce are generally saddled with a rather stuffy, old fashioned image, which doesn’t sit at all well in a city like ours. Business by the Sea is partly about showing people just how vibrant and energetic a modern Chamber of Commerce can be.”
