Young film-makers seek ‘workplace heroes’ for Talking Jobs website

Talking Jobs, an online resource created to help young people make important decisions about their education and careers, is asking local people to recommend ‘workplace heroes’ (employees or colleagues) who they think would be good candidates to talk about their career path.

Film-making students from City College Brighton and Hove will be filming a series of case studies which are aimed at providing insight and inspiration for those who are making decisions about their future career. Only one hour of each interviewee’s time will be needed to ask them 32 questions about their work, experience in education and a little about their family backgrounds. Nominated interviewees will also be asked to supply a snapshot of themselves as child or teenager for use on the site.

The dates on which the filming is planned to take place are Monday 15th, Monday 22nd and Monday 29th November. The collaboration between City College and Talking Jobs has been funded by the Aimhigher programme, a key component of government policy to widen and increase participation in higher education.

Andrew Manson, founder of Talking Jobs says: “Many young people lack access to appropriate or sufficiently diverse role models when it comes to looking at the education and career paths they can take. Young people should know that their own choices need to be informed yet realistic, based on their potential and not their postcode or background. I also wanted to celebrate the everyday heroes that surround us, people competent in their work and respected by their peers, but not necessarily shouting about it. By nominating a workplace hero, you could be helping inspire a young person to make positive choices.”

City College Careers Co-ordinator Rick Cowling adds: "This project is a great opportunity for our film-making students to visit working environments and to complete their Corporate & Media module. Much more than this though, the footage will motivate and inspire many more of our students as they explore the world of work and career opportunities during their careers education, and it is not just our learners who’ll benefit. The footage they generate for the Talking Jobs website will be available to eleven colleges to use in their careers education programmes. These authentic and honest accounts of various career paths will be inspiring young people across the South-East and hopefully broadening their horizons."
