At our first Chamber breakfast of 2017 we had guest speaker Professor Debra Humphris, Vice Chancellor of the University of Brighton.
Debra’s route to the job was far from conventional. Once a nurse, she spent two decades in the NHS and her PhD looked at the implementation of policy in clinical practice. She moved into higher education in 2000 and joined Brighton a year ago from Imperial College.
Her role at Brighton covers leadership and management of the university. As an openly LGBT senior leader, Debra is passionate about equality and diversity and ensuring a high quality student experience. She believes it is crucial that universities help support students to make the most of the opportunities they are offered.
Debra spoke about how, under her leadership, Brighton strives to do this. She talked about what it's like to manage a large and diverse organisation, and how universities and local businesses can work together to help young people.
