Non-Chamber event: 9% Event - To Eqality & Beyond

Non-Chamber event

TICKETS HERE

The seventh in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton. Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, there will be a complimentary glass of something special from a local drinks producer.

This event focuses on equality and diversity, giving a platform to three hugely impressive women, blazing a trail for others in three very diverse industries.   The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that previous events have sold out several weeks in advance.

Previous attendees have said: 'The 9% event - truly inspiring! It was so great to meet so many like-minded, entrepreneurial women in an informal, relaxed setting. I made some great connections and hopefully some friends too. An absolute must-have for your networking diary' and 'the best networking event I've ever attended.'

THE SPEAKERS

Kathryn Jacob OBE - CEO of Pearl & Dean

Kathryn is the CEO of cinema advertising giant Pearl & Dean, author of The Glass Wall and has been honoured with an OBE for services to the promotion of equality and diversity.  Regularly listed as one of the media world's most powerful people, she is a trailblazer in the often male-dominated advertising industry and is responsible for creating innovative and original solutions, including the world's first interactive 3D ad for O2.

She co-authored bestselling book The Glass Wall, which gives women the tools they need to master any situation. From unlocking ambition and developing resilience to nurturing creativity and getting noticed, it explains the skills that everyone needs to learn to help break down that wall and create better workplaces for all.

Outside of work Kathryn sits on the board of Women’s Aid, the Development Board at RADA, the board of the Association of Colleges and the Council and board of the Advertising Association. She’s on the Government Expert Group on Body Confidence.  We are so thrilled that she will be sharing her wealth of experience and her amazing career path with us at the 9% Event.

Professor Kelly Snook - former NASA research scientist, music producer & Professor of Media Arts Technology

Kelly Snook is a Professor of Media Arts Technology and has a background in aerospace engineering, music production, audio engineering, and data sonification research. She is one of the developers of the mi.mu gloves for gestural control of music and visuals.

She currently serves as Professor of Media Arts Technology at the University of Brighton and holds a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. She spent two decades as a NASA Research Scientist with a focus on Mars and the moon, before turning her attention to music full-time in 2010 when she joined Imogen Heap as her studio manager and musical assistant, subsequently touring with Ariana Grande in 2015 as her mi.mu glove technician.

Her current research project is the development of Concordia, an immersive musical instrument for scientific exploration based on the work of Johannes Kepler, which allows people to experience and play the music of the spheres.  She will be discussing women in STEM, science, space and beyond!

Jan Gooding - Chair of Stonewall

Jan is a marketing leader with a career which has included senior executive experience working with blue chip companies like BT, British Gas, Diageo, Unilever and, most latterly, as the Group Brand director at Aviva.  In her final role at Aviva, as their first Global Inclusion Director, she led the introduction of the ground-breaking policy of equal parental leave.

She is currently the Chair of LGBT equality charity Stonewall, which reaches and supports LGBT activists in over 70 countries worldwide. When she took over the helm, Stonewall was focussed on equality based on people’s sexual orientation, and did not actively campaign on gender identity issues. Under her leadership Stonewall extended it remit to campaign for trans equality in 2015.

Jan is known to be one of the UK’s most outspoken marketing leaders on the subject of diversity and inclusion and we are really excited that she is joining this hugely exciting 9% Event line up.
