Non-Chamber event: 9% Event - Game Changers

Non-Chamber event

The sixth in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton. Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, there will be a complimentary festive cocktail to celebrate the last 9% Event of the year.

This event focuses on female game changers, who are blazing trails and changing industries for other women in sport and tech.  The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that previous events have sold out several weeks in advance.

Previous attendees have said: 'The 9% event - truly inspiring! It was so great to meet so many like-minded, entrepreneurial women in an informal, relaxed setting. I made some great connections and hopefully, in time, some friends too. An absolute must-have for your networking diary' and 'the best networking event I've ever attended.'

THE SPEAKERS

Karen Dobres and Shannon Moloney, Lewes Football Club

One of the largest gender pay gaps in the world is in football, and the recent publication of a alary survey showing that the combined pay of those in top seven women's football leagues equals that of a single top male footballer shows that 'the beautiful game' is looking pretty ugly in terms of gender pay parity.  Lewes FC is the first professional football club in the world to pay its male and female players the same, and we are delighted to have Karen Dobres, Ambassador for the Club, join us to discuss the trail-blazing Equality FC campaign.  Karen was involved in the successful pitch to the FA at Wembley to join the Championship League, and also reports on Lewes FC's Women's matches on BBC Radio Sussex.  She will be discussing the ground-breaking new campaign, how she's working on making the football ground more of a woman's space and the lessons other businesses can learn from Lewes's equal pay movement.

She will be joined by former Tottenham Hotspur player and current Lewes FC midfielder Shannon Moloney, who will be sharing her footballing career and the barriers and prejudices women face in this heavily male-dominated sport, as well as how she and others are helping to break down the barriers and get more women into football.

Alice Boyd-Leslie, codebar

Alice is a front-end web developer, who is one of the codebar Brighton oganisers.  She will be joining the 9% Event panel to discuss her journey into tech, and how codebar has been instrumental in her career.  A non-profit initiative that facilitates the growth of a diverse tech community, codebar is a game-changer in the heavily male dominated tech world, opening up avenues for more women to get into developing, coding, programming and more, and creating a more diverse and incredibly supportive community.

The Networking

The 9% Event aims to offer a smarter, more effective and strategic way of networking. When you book your ticket, you will receive an email asking for your top three objectives from the networking section of the evening; for example, to meet other people in your industry, to meet other freelancers and to meet potential clients. We will put you into groups, each with a colour code, so that when you arrive, you can locate other women in the same group as you, and instantly start up a conversation that will be useful to you both. We understand that attending networking events alone can be intimidating, but with this system, plus our friendly welcome, we will put you instantly at ease and allow you to make the most out of meeting others. We hope there will be many useful connections made, and even more friendships!

The Venue

For the first time, the 9% Event will take place at The Projects, a brand new coworking and events space for Brighton's creative community.  The doors to this very exciting and beautifully designed new space only open a couple of weeks before this event, so it's the perfect opportunity to get a sneak peek of the stunning new venue.
